At a tasting at the Hotel Dieu this afternoon of the 45 wines to be auctioned tomorrow, the Director of the Hospices de Beaune wines Roland Masse said “2010 is a very Burgundian year”. The Pinot Noirs have returned to classic definitions of their terroirs and nuances of climats.

The harvest in September was small but healthy, with excellent acidity and quality. “I was very happy to vinify these grapes” said Masse. He described the wines with words such as: finesse, elegance, supple, balance, good structure, texture and concentration, before adding again “un millesime Bourgignon”.

The 13 white wines are rich with concentration of sugar and acidity. The fresh acidity started with the lovely Saint-Romain Joseph Menault, through lifted lime of Meursault-Porusots Jéhans Humblot and linear lemon of Meursault-Genevrieres Baudot, to the very citrus and beautifully fresh Corton-Charlemagne Roi Soleil, showing purity and elegance. The Batard Montrachet Dames de Flandres was singing with expression, intensity and lingering fragrance.

The 32 red wines show grape maturity with pure aromas, soft tannins and the characteristic fresh acidity of 2010. The ten wines from Beaune are fine and delicate with an outstanding Clos des Arvaux. This premier cru is intense and expressive with depth and smaller purple berries. A silky red texture is carried from Volnay Santenots Gauvain and Pommard Epenots Dom Goblet to a deeper violet silk in Corton Charlotte Dumay. The tasting finished with concentrated elegant sweetness in Clos de la Roche Cyrot-Chaudron/Georges Kritter and Mazis Chambertin Madeleine Collignon.

The local journalist and author of the History of the “Hospices de Beaune, the Saga of a Winemaking Hospital” Laurent Gotti thinks that even though prices may increase on the record 2009 auction, the total may be affected beacause of the lower volume of wine in 2010, however the rarity factor of availability may surprise:

For the second year, Albert Bichot is offering bids on individual bottles of wine rather than entire barrels:

The 2010 wines of the Hospices de Beaune will be auctioned by Christie’s on Sunday 21 November in Beaune. Christie’s Live online bids registration until 11 am.
